A recent article in Huanqiu, discusses the latest Middle Eastern conflict and presents China’s position.
Colombian President Petro
The new round of Palestinian-Israeli conflict that erupted on 7 October caused sudden tension in the Middle East. Petro reiterated his call for a peace dialogue on the Palestinian-Israeli issue on the same day. He also referred to a speech he delivered at the UN last month calling on Western powers not to differentiate between the Russian-Ukrainian and Palestinian-Israeli conflicts with double standards.
Israel and Palestine are at war again in the Gaza Strip. In my speech at the United Nations, I showed how the world powers treat Russia's occupation of Ukraine in one way but treat Israel's occupation of Palestine in a very different way. "I support the establishment of a dialogue for peace and the full recognition of the State of Palestine. I support the establishment of a dialogue for peace and the full recognition of the State of Palestine.Petro said in a post on social media X
According to the website of the Colombian presidency, Petro said in a speech on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on 19 September that "the reasons for defending Ukraine and defending Palestine should be the same. Is there a difference between Ukraine and Palestine? Isn't it time to end both wars?" He said the UN should convene separate peace conferences on Ukraine and Palestine in his speech.
In another speech on 15 September, Petro asked the same question:
What is the difference between the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict? If they are the same, why the double standard of creating a so-called 'great front of human solidarity' in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict but ruling it out in the case of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories?
A report by the US-based United Press International (UPI) noted that Petro was not the only media columnist and social media user to point out the West's "hypocrisy" on issues such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict. For example, one social media user, who identifies as an "author," wrote:
If you support Ukraine but not Palestine, if you condemn Russia but not Israel or the United States, then you have reached the pinnacle of hypocrisy.
UPI also cited data provided by the United Nations, noting that before this surprise Hamas attack, Israeli forces had killed 227 Palestinians so far this year. In contrast, Palestinian militants had killed 29 Israelis.
In stark contrast to the double standards and hypocrisy of the Western Powers, China's position on sovereignty, peace and history has been consistent: it supports both the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and the establishment of a fully sovereign and independent State of Palestine based on the 1967 borders; and, about the conflict between the two territories, it favours the solution of the problem through peaceful negotiations based on the complexities of history.
On 8 October, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China said, in connection with the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, that China was deeply concerned about the current increase in tension and the escalation of violence in Palestine and Israel, and that it called on all parties concerned to exercise calm and restraint, to cease fire immediately, to protect the civilian population and to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.
The recurrence of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict fully demonstrates that the long-term stagnation of the peace process is unsustainable. The fundamental way out of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict lies in the implementation of the two-state resolution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian State. The international community should enhance its sense of urgency, increase its commitment to the question of Palestine and promote the early resumption of peace talks between Palestine and Israel to find a way to lasting peace. China will continue to make unremitting efforts with the international community.
